DAVID A. DIETERLE, Ph.D. President and Chief Academic Officer Michigan Council on Economic Education Adjunct Associate Professor and Director, EconomicsCenter Walsh College
Dr. David A. Dieterle received his Ph.D. in Teacher Education and Curriculum with an emphasis in Economics from Michigan State University after 12 years of teaching in Michigan public schools. He has a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree in Economics from Purdue University, with B.A. and M.A. degrees from Central Michigan University.
Dr. Dieterle assumed his duties with the Michigan Council on Economic Education on September 1,1999. Dr. Dieterle also is Adjunct Associate Professor of Economics in the MBA Program at Walsh College and is a Temporary Assistant Professor in Teacher Education and Professional Development at Central Michigan University.
Dr. Dieterle began his economic education career in Michigan as Associate Director at the Center for Economic Education at CentralMichiganUniversity in 1979. From 1983 to 1985, he served as Associate Director and Assistant Professor at the Greater Cincinnati Center for Economic Education at the University of Cincinnati.
In 1985, he was named President of the Nebraska Council on Economic Education (NCEE). He held that position until 1987. David was appointed the President/Executive Director of the Illinois Council on Economic Education in October of1987. He also directed the Center for Economic Education at Northern Illinois University. In June 1995, he joined Financial Design Group and EdgewoodCollege in Madison, Wisconsin.
As a CONSULTANT Dr. Dieterle has served as economic education consultant to several state Departments of Education including Michigan, Illinois, Nebraska, and Ohio. Most recently served on Social Studies Task Force for Michigan Board of Education to assess MEAP Social Studies Test scores and serve as content specialist for development of Strand IV- Economics, Grade Level Content Expectations. He is currently the Economics content specialist for Oakland Schools.
He has taught and/or consulted for the Newspaper In Education Programs (Chicago Tribune, Detroit Free Press), Foundation for Teaching Economics, Economics for the Clergy, Learning to Give, Junior Achievement, and Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan educational programs as well as assessing materials for many others for quality economics content and educational soundness.
He has recently been requested to lead the development of a two-year professional development teaching certificate program for Zambian teachers of community and private schools through Campus Crusade for Christ-Zambia.
He has served as an economics consultant for both TV and radio media outlets.
As a SPEAKER and PRESENTER Dr. Dieterle has made speeches and presentations in the area of economic education and economics to civic groups and academic audiences throughout the United States.
Dr. Dieterle presented a paper to the Ministry of Education in Zambia on national curriculum. He has been presenting conferences for Zambian teachers and administrators, developing a focus on economics and entrepreneurship education for their teacher education.
As an AUTHOR Dr. Dieterle is the author or editor of five books or teaching resources, many articles and several curriculum guides. His book topics have included economics and philanthropy, economics in the state standards, entrepreneurship and energy economic education. South-Western Publishing published experiential based Economic Experiences in 1990. He has been a reviewer and manuscript consultant for professional journals and several textbooks. Dr. Dieterle has received public and private grants for energy, entrepreneurship, and curriculum development economic education.
Honors and Recognitions
Dr. Dieterle was nationally honored for excellence in teaching economics to teachers, and received the Economics Faculty Fellow from the College of Business Administration, University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In 1981-82 he was the recipient of the Robert E. Horton-Goldman Sachs Economic Education Scholarship at Purdue University.
David was the first national Chair of the Stock Market Game Program National Network Advisory Committee. He has served on the Boards of the Illinois Institute for Entrpreneurship Education, Students in Free Enterprise Chapter at Southern Illinois University, and Illinois Business Week. He served on the Executive Committee of the National Association of Economic Educators (NAEE). Dr. Dieterle represented MCEE as one of the founding members of the Michigan JumpStart Coalition.
Dr. Dieterle is currently serving as president of the Michigan State University’s College of Education Alumni Association, and serves on the Advisory Board for Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago-Detroit Branch MoneySmart Program, and Board of New Hope Center for Grief Support in Northville.
His professional affiliations include National Association of Economic Educators, Michigan Society of Association Executives, Michigan Council for the Social Studies, and Economics Club of Detroit, .
FOR FUN, David enjoys golf, fishing, hanging out at his cottage, music and movies. David is most proud of his four daughters and two grandchildren.
